Waimanalo Camp
Oahu's east side is home to beautiful Waimanalo Beach. Not many people come here and the ocean is very beautiful, so this beach is a hidden spot. However, there is a camping area, so this is a perfect spot for leisure activities. Hawaiimode.com invites you to come stay with us as we spend the night camping out in Waimanalo.
We arrive at 5:30 pm. As soon as we arrive, we start making the tent. As this is my first time, I fumble to make the tent…or not, as I just take pictures of the others making it. The weather is slightly cloudy. We were a little worried, but thankfully the weather held up.
At 5:50 pm we finish setting up the tent. We finished the tent in just 10 minutes, most likely because there were a lot of people helping. It is bigger than expected and can fit about 7 or 8 sleeping adults. I start to get excited thinking that I will be sleeping here tonight. In addition, there is no fee to stay at this camp site, so it first come, first serve. In exchange though, they do not loan out equipment at all, so you have to come prepared with things like a tent, barbeque set, and lamps amongst other things.
At 6:20 pm, we start the barbeque
Around sunset at 7 pm it gets dark and we turn on the lamps. Then, as all the members this time are 21 years or older, we had a little bit of alcohol. Having a barbeque, alcohol, and enjoying nature in the dark is the epitome of camping.
At 10:00 pm, we take a stroll in the middle of the night and it is completely dark as we take a walk in the area around our tent. As there is a road nearby, there is street lighting and we are able to walk without a lamp. However there is nothing. This place is for the pure enjoyment of camping. It’s as if the liveliness of Waikiki was an illusion. We were able to see the Big Dipper in the night sky.
At 7am we wake up
Since it was the first time staying in a tent, we woke up early. However, thanks to that, we were able to view the beautiful sunrise of Waimanalo Beach, and the saying that 'the early bird gets the worm' fits this situation. We arrived in the evening the day before, and since this is west-facing beach we can’t look forward to the sunset. We highly recommend you wake up early.
At 7:30am we have breakfast
Our breakfast is yesterday’s barbeque. It is a little heavy for 7:30 in the morning. However we took this as one of the fun parts of camping, and ate a lot of meat. Of course as a manner for the camp site, we have to get rid of that old charcal and clean the barbeque set. Rememeber, work before play even in camping. Even for fun things, you have to do things properly until the end.
At 11:00 am, we have to swim in the ocean right in front of our eyes that is beautiful for swimming. After cooking the meat on the barbeque, we should tan our skin under the sun. We should enjoy Hawaii after getting our browned, healthy skin.
At 12:00 noon, we clean up and leave We take down the tent which was used to its full extent and pack it away. While cleaning up, we talk about what happened the day before and reflect upon our memories. That’s how fun the past day has been. We were well prepared beforehand this time, so not much went wrong. However, if we had forgotten something, there are no convenience stores or supermarkets nearby. We recommend that you plan beforehand what you need when you prepare for camping. However, since camping was this fun, the preparations might be fun as well. Everyone should definitely try this!

A closer look at Waimanalo.。
Check out the inside of our tent. It has alot more space than I thought. We can live in this thing! Everything is big here!
Inside the tent, it was taller than we thought it was going to be and we were able to get by without squeezing. As usual, everything in America is bigger.
You can’t barbeque without a barbeque set, and in addition you can buy one from places like Wal-Mart for as low as $30. There are other things you need such as thongs and charcoal, but the prices aren’t that expensive and you can still enjoy yourself.
Because the trade winds blow into here from the east, this area is very windy.
Using the windy conditions here, there are many people who enjoy kite surfing or windsurfing. The picture shows someone kite surfing.
The morning sun creeps into the tent. It feels good to wake up while soaking in the morning sun.
It is extremely difficult to see with the morning sun in the background, but there are many other tents set up in the surrounding area.
