Long Lines for Summer Fun
The number of Japanese families staying in Hawaii for extended periods during the summer has been on the rise for the last several years. This is because their children are increasingly participating in classes called summer fun or summer school. Being able to have their children learn English at an early age, and gain global values – all while playing in Hawaii's great natural beauty – are what I think is the attraction to the summer fun program. As the popularity of summer fun grows by the year, it is becoming increasingly difficult to participate.
Summer fun isn't only popular amongst the Japanese, but amongst local families as well. With the Hawaii summer fun program's low price of a few hundred dollars for 7 weeks, nearly 10,000 children are estimated to apply, with selection based on a first-come first-serve basis. Because of this, parents line up to register for hours, no, even from the night before to guarantee their spot. Parents are getting desperate as the lines begin earlier and earlier every year.
Children enrolled in summer fun across the state are anxiously looking forward to the various activities and field trips that lay in store for them. It may tough, but a parent will do anything to have their child make lasting summer memories.
