Kona: A Different Hawaii
The Big Island is becoming increasingly popular amongst the neighbor islands. If you have a resort experience that is different than what you'd get on O'ahu, I'd recommend heading to Kona. There's so many things to do there, like seeing the Big Island's famous active volcano, Kilauea; going whale or dolphin watching; or just enjoy a leisurely game of golf. It's all there! Aside from that, there are so many great resorts being built in Kona, like the Hilton Waikoloa Village, that is just on a scale larger than the resorts on O'ahu. There's no better place to heal your body and soul than the Big Island!
As part of plans to revision Kona as representing the “Old Hawaii”, the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort was built just 10 minutes from Kona airport, garnering lots of attention. The resort was built at the location that ancient Hawaiian Kings would frequent for rest and relaxation, and is overlooking a white, sandy beach – a rarity on this volcanic island. In fact other hotels in the area only have man-made beaches and lagoons, making the Marriott Hotel the only one in Waikoloa with a natural beach. Furthermore, the hotel is right next to the shopping mall, “King's Shop”, making it very easy to go shopping and getting something to eat.
Each of the 545 rooms have been recently remodeled, and have a very urban feel to them. The lanais (verandas) are very spacious, and offer a great view of the ocean, so by all means, book an ocean view room! You can sit out there on the lanai and enjoy a room service breakfast, or relax as you watch the beautiful sunset. Inside the hotel grounds, you'll find a tennis court, a golf course, and a pool that is even connected to a water slide! You can also take part in an optional tour to go whale watching if you'd like. And all rooms have an internet connection available, so all you have to do is bring your computer to surf the web.
The lobby, pool, and party hall are all currently undergoing major renovations that are scheduled to be completed in May. I personally can't wait to see what they have in store for us!
