Rabbits & Hawaii!!!
East O'ahu is the best for driving. Driving through Makapu'u is simply breathtaking - the sky and the ocean are both so blue, its hard to tell where the ocean ends and the sky begins.
You'll see many small islands in the ocean off of Makapu'u, though the biggest and most recognizable of them is Manana Island, or "Rabbit Island" as many people call it. Most people would think the island was called "Rabbit Island" for its uncanny resemblance to a rabbit swimming in the ocean with its ears folded down, but to tell the truth, the island was called rabbit island because there were actually rabbits living there!
There originally weren't any rabbits in the Hawaiian Islands, but they were eventually brought here as food. Rabbit Island was used as a place where they could raise the rabbits separately from the rest of the animal population. But the plan eventually crumbled, leaving the rabbits as the sole inhabitants of the island. The rabbit population grew so fast, that no matter where you went on the island, you'll probably see a bunch of rabbits eating anything, even the grass! However, it eventually became difficult for the rabbits to coexist with the sea birds, so the State of Hawaii decided it was necessary to get rid of all the rabbits. That was a very selfish decision when you think of the rabbits, the result of which has left only sea birds on Rabbit Island.
Anyway, if you're ever driving by, be sure to stop and take a picture!
