Climb Diamond Head!!!
As the title implies, Diamond Head is one of Oahu’s main tourist attractions.
This mountain was not given its name because of its shape, but because in the 1800’s when British sailors climbed this mountain, they found shiny mineral deposits, called calcite crystals, which they mistook as Diamonds. Thus the mountain was called Diamond Head. However, the original name of the mountain was “Leahi,” since the Hawaiians believed it to resemble the head of a tuna.
The islands of Hawai’i are a collection of islands created as a result of volcanic activity and Diamond Head was one of the many volcanoes that existed. Be relieved, since then there has been no volcanic activity for no less than 150,000 years after it has stopped, and there is most likely no chance of it ever erupting again.
When hiking up Diamond Head, the road is paved with concrete. Gradually as you make your way to the top, the path tends to be repetitious, with it slopes and stairs. However, once you reach the top, all the time and effort was well worth it, because you will be rewarded with a view that will literally take your breath away. The mountain view is great, and you can see Waikiki beach from the top. If you take a camera with you, do not hesitate to take a picture.
On your travel up the mountain, you may see old roads, other trails, and remnants of an old base, which were from previous times when the Kingdom of Hawaii was under the control of the U.S. Military.
When both ascending and descending Diamond Head, it is said to take about 1 hour or so, and it is also a fairly simple hike. It really isn’t that bad, because even if you forget to bring water or even have to go to the bathroom, there is a restroom and a place to purchase refreshments. So, compared to other hikes, this one is a piece of cake, and the view is worth the walk. Get going!!
