Amazing Sea Turtles!
North Shore's "Laniakea Beach" is famous as the spot where many sea turtles come to shore to dry their shells.
Though you can see these sea turtles lazily sleeping on the sandy beach year round, you actually have a better chance of catching a glimpse of them during the winter.
As soon as the turtles are sighted on the beach, the area is immediately roped off so no one can get too close to the them. These turtles are actually an endangered species, so they are strictly protected under Hawaii law. You can take pictures and watch them from behind the roped off area, but direct contact with the turtles is prohibited.
In Hawaii, the sea turtles are affectionately known by their Hawaiian name, "Honu". Many people claim that just watching the turtles is enough to put their hearts at ease. And seeing their clumsy bodies desperately crawl out of the water is just so darn cute!
Unlike Waikiki Beach, Laniakea Beach is quite rocky, so you'll need to be careful when swimming there. But, the beach is worth checking out for the sea turtles alone.
