If you mention Hawaii one thing that comes to mind are flower leis. Leis made of fresh flowers are a beautiful Hawaiian item.

Leis have a very deep meaning. They represent hospitality as in “welcome” or “welcome back”. They’re also given to celebrate birthdays and when seeing someone off. These are all important moments in a person’s life and therefore Leis are a vital item to Hawaiians.

However, fresh flower leis in or around Waikiki are somewhat expensive. To get your hands on a good quality lei at a reasonable price Chinatown is considered the best, but I would like to tell you about a secret spot near the airport.

If you turn at the signboard indicating “Lei Stand” on your way to the Honolulu Airport, you’ll find 12 lei shops down a little road. As the signboard insinuates, you’ll find hand-made leis made one at a time in these little shops. Besides the usual leis you’ve seen before, you can get a variety of special leis made using the cutest flowers here. The freedom of choice will leave you dumbfounded.
