Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Hawaii
January 21 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year.
Though people visiting Hawaii from abroad may not know much about this day, there is no American resident who doesn’t. So for all you visiting, here is a little history lesson!
During a period of great racism against blacks in the United States, Martin Luther King Jr. led the fight against injustices done to black people and went against written and unwritten segregation laws. In 1964, he was awarded the Nobel peace prize for his leadership in the civil rights movement.
In commemoration of his birth, January 15, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated every third Monday of January. It is a day for honoring his ideas and achievements. This year the third Monday falls on January 21, on which day a parade of over 2000 people will be held on Kalakaua Street, along with bands and other special events starting at 9am.
