The scoop on King Kamehameha!
The Great Kamehamaha is featured in very guidebook and just about everyone knows about him. Most people have either visited or at least passed by the magnificent bronze statue in downtown Honolulu, built in commemoration of the King who united all the Hawaiian Islands in 1810.
However, this statue is actually a duplicate! The original statue was built in France but sank to the bottom of the sea when the boat bringing it over went down on the way to Hawaii.
The statue was then retrieved from the bottom of the sea and brought to the Big Island while a duplicate was made for the island of Oahu.
There are many interesting stories about the King Kamehameha statue in downtown Honolulu. It appears this statue was not in fact made in the image of the King but rather of his friend! Yes, King Kamehameha was not confident about his looks so the services of his handsome and well-built friend became necessary.
The Great King Kamehameha was somewhat of a fat man with a big belly! When you really delve into history and discover the inside scoop, it just keeps getting better and better!
