A church that came up from the sea
KAWAIAHA’O CHURCH is often referred to as a miracle “church that came up from the sea”. That’s because the coral slabs used to build the structure were carried in from the sea.
That’s right, 14 000 pieces of coral, each weighing over 1000 pounds, were brought in by hand to build the main structure in the early 19th century. It appears that the church had been rebuilt four times previously due to damage by fire and heavy rain. The fifth time was a charm though thanks to the immense natural strength of the coral.
This church is not only a religious structure but also an ode to Hawaii’s rich history. As a testament of such greatness you will find historical objects within the grounds as well as 2500-string pipe organ inside the church itself.
