Camp in the mountains or by the sea!
A popular activity in the summer is definitely camping. In Hawaii we’re blessed with the choice of camping in the mountains or by the sea. Anyone can go camping, families, friends, co-workers, classmates, etc., and it’s a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city! Why not enjoy a day on the beach or hiking in the forest, and wind down at night looking at the bright stars in the sky?
There’s only one catch, camping in Hawaii is strictly regulated by the government as a means to preserve the environment and ensure safety. Therefore, a permit is required to camp at any camp site.
Permits may be obtained at any Honolulu Satellite City Hall, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Each applicant must apply in person and be at least 18 years old to receive a permit allowing a maximum of ten (10) persons on site, and two (2) family sized tents erected. Reservations are only accepted at the earliest two Fridays prior to the camping period requested.
Popular sites, such as waterfront, get taken fast so you need to plan ahead and rush to beat the crowds!
