Visit a sugar mill
A long time ago, when the KAHUKU SUGAR MILL was still in operation, more than 50 tons of sugarcane was processed every hour using the equipment on site! Today, you can go visit the site and see these magnificent machines for free.
The Kahuku Sugar Mill was built in 1890 and served as the lifeblood for Portuguese, Japanese and Filipino immigrants, many who came to Hawaii to work exclusively at the The Kahuku Sugar Mill plantation.
Now that that the sugarcane industry in Hawaii is virtually non-existent, the factory has been closed and demolished. Nevertheless, members of the community have built a special tourist site where you can view many of the machines used to mill sugar in the old days.
Much of the old equipment is accompanied by photos and information that reveals much about the life of the plantation workers!
When you visit the islands, be sure to ssk your local travel agent about the sugar mill and other historical tours.
