Kawaiaha'o Church
Hawaii's resorts are a source of attraction for many visitors everyday, but recently, they have been the site of many wedding ceremonies in the islands. Hawaii sees many happy couples make the trip to the islands to exchange their vows, particularly in June because many women long to be "June Brides".
Wedding ceremonies being held on resort grounds has become very popular over the years, and Hawaii is no exception, with it ranking in the top of the country's most desirable places to wed. Popular places to get married in Hawaii includes the Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hotel's church, and the various churches surrounded by Hawaii's beautiful natural environment on Kauai. However, of all these places, one cannot forget an old church in downtown Oahu.
Kawaiaha'o is the first Christian church ever built in the State of Hawaii. It's a historical church, located by other prominent Hawaiian structures, like 'Iolani Palace, and the Honolulu Hale. As you'd expect, many couples from around the world continue to get married at the church everyday.
The State Board of Land and Natural Resources approved the building of a new annexation at Kawaiah'o. This summer, a $12 million budget has been established for the building a multipurpose building next to the church. The building of the new structure was decided with the assistance of the state and the Board of Land and Natural Resources. The building will be two stories tall, with office rooms, classrooms, conference rooms, social halls, and a kitchen, as well as a library and bookstore. There will also be a room dedicated to displaying historical items related to the church. With the building serving these various purposes, one has to wonder what the final product will look like.
Kawaiaha'o Church was founded in 1842 by Christian missionaries who were trying to spread the word of their faith. The church quickly became a very important place in the islands, despite the traditional ceremonies that were the norm of 19th century Hawaii, that was under the rule of a Hawaiian monarchy. The church gathers donations and aid from outside groups to cover yearly maintenance costs, and operates as one of the many tourist attractions of Honolulu. This is one of the most famous churches in the world, so if you're going to get married, what better place than in the heart of paradise?
Although the annex won't be complete for another 3 years, it isn't a cause for worry as the church itself will continue its normal operation during the construction period. From now, and probably forever more, wedding bells will continue to ring from Kawaiaha'o Church!
